Understanding Highly Capable Programs in Puyallup

Puyallup School District offers Highly Capable services across multiple grade levels, with programming designed to provide greater depth, challenge, enrichment, and opportunities for students to learn alongside intellectual peers.

ABC supports students and families across these programs, but program structure, eligibility, identification, locations, and transportation are managed by Puyallup School District. The information below is intended as a family-friendly overview, with links to the district for current details.

YOUNG SCHOLARS

Grades K–2

Young Scholars serves highly capable students in kindergarten through second grade. Students remain at their neighborhood elementary school and participate in enrichment with other highly capable learners. Activities are designed to extend classroom learning through literature, science, vocabulary, critical thinking, problem-solving, and deeper exploration of ideas.

Young Scholars provides students with opportunities to learn alongside intellectual peers in a multi-age setting while continuing to participate in their regular school community. QUEST (QUALITY EXPERIENCES TO STIMULATE THINKING)

Grades 3–6

QUEST is a full-time Highly Capable program for students in grades 3 through 6. Students attend a regional QUEST classroom at one of the district’s host schools and learn alongside other highly capable students in an environment designed for greater depth, complexity, rigor, and accelerated learning.

QUEST students are also part of the broader host-school community and participate in specialist classes, school activities, and other enrichment opportunities. PAGE (PROGRAM FOR ACCELERATED GIFTED EDUCATION)

Grades 7–8

PAGE is a cohort-based Highly Capable program for students in grades 7 and 8. Students participate in advanced coursework designed to provide greater depth, complexity, rigor, and acceleration while learning alongside other highly capable students.

Depending on grade level and placement, students may receive PAGE services in English Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Science. HIGH SCHOOL ADVANCED LEARNING

Grades 9–12

At the high school level, there is not a separate Highly Capable program like Young Scholars, QUEST, or PAGE. Instead, students can choose from a range of advanced learning opportunities based on their interests, strengths, and post-secondary goals.

The skills and learning habits developed through earlier Hi-Cap programs can provide a strong foundation for these next steps. High school options may include Advanced Placement (AP), AP Capstone, College in the High School, Running Start, advanced arts pathways, and accelerated coursework in core subjects, with students working with counselors and school staff to build an appropriate course plan.
