While it is still very early in the legislative session, there was positive news to report today for highly capable students and their families. The Governor’s second budget proposal maintains funding for gifted programs at the levels that had been budgeted last year. The session is a long ways from being over, and there remains a signficant amount of work to be done, but this marks a signficant change from the complete elimination of funding that had been proposed in the Governor’s first budget. We will work to ensure that funding for highly capable remains in the final budget bill, whenever it ultimately passes.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to write the Governor and to write their legislators to urge them to support our highly capable students. This would be a great time to send a follow up message, letting them know that their work has not gone unnoticed. Please see our previous message, “Have you written the Governor yet?, for instructions.
Even with good news from Olympia, there is still work to be done at home in Puyallup. If you have not yet completed the District survey on budget priorities, please take a few minutes to do so now. This is also a great time to talk to your friends and neighbors about the coming Levy election. If the levy fails, what happens in Olympia will not matter. Our program will be gone.
